I called a spade a spade.
call a spade a spade '뭔가를 꾸미지 않고 사실 그대로 솔직하게 말하는 것'을 call a spade a spade 라고 한다. 상당히 오래전부터 이와 유사한 형태의 라티어 속담이 전해지고 있긴 하지만 정확한 유래를 알기는 어렵다고 한다. 영어 문헌상에 이 표현이 처음 선을 보인 것은 16세기 초 스코틀랜드 종교 개혁가인 John Knox를 통해서였다. 처음에는 call a fig a fig and a spade a spade 라는 긴 표현이었는데 오늘날에 와서는 줄여서 짧게 쓰이고 있다.
